- Swim in life guarded areas, &
check with them
daily regarding ocean conditions.
- Never swim, snorkel or surf
alone.
Use the buddy system & swim fins when
possible.
- Watch the ocean for at least 20
minutes before entering.
Waves & surges come in sets
with calm periods in between.
- Never turn your back to the ocean.
-
Do not rely on flotation devices
such as surfboards, boogie boards & rafts. If you
can't swim, stay on the shoreline.
- Look for warning signs & flags,
and take their
message seriously.
- No alcoholic beverages are
allowed on most beaches,
and no matter which beach
you choose, lock your car
and never, ever leave your
valuables unattended.
- Supervise children closely, even
when a lifeguard is present.
- Never dive head-first into the
water.
- If caught in a rip current: Don't
panic; don't fight it;
swim parallel to the shore,
then in.
- Slip, Slap, Slop! Slip into a
shirt, slap on a hat, slop on the sunscreen. Protect
yourself from the sun.
